Summit was initially known as Summit Township taking portions of New Province Township and Springfield Township. Summit was officially incorporated as a city in 1899. There are several derivations of the Summit's name, including its location atop the Second Watchung Mountain, the Summit Lodge, which jurist James Kent moved to in 1837, still stands today at 50 Kent Place Boulevard, and a local sawmill owner who granted passage to the Morris and Essex Railroad for the route to "the summit of Short Hills."
