8,000-Mile Service

The Jeep Grand Cherokee owner’s manual states that the first service appointment should take place at around 8,000 miles and then every 8,000 miles after that. Your Grand Cherokee’s first routine maintenance service should include an oil change, an oil filter change, and a tire rotation. As many car owners know, oil changes are a vital part of vehicle maintenance. Engine oil is circulated through the internal combustion engine to ensure that there is no grinding metal parts and that the engine runs smoothly and efficiently. Tire rotations are essential because it increases the tread life, maintaining the tread depth longer so that you keep a good grip on the road and get a long life out of the tires. As a good rule of thumb, every oil change should be accompanied by a tire rotation. At every service appointment, the technician will perform routine safety checks to make sure everything is working properly. An important thing we must mention is that if you use your Grand Cherokee for off-roading or towing, oil changes should take place more frequently, roughly every 6,000 miles, as these activities put added strain on the engine and break down oil faster.

16,000-Mile Service

When your odometer reads approximately 16,000 miles, it’s time for your second oil change and tire rotation. In addition to these services and the routine safety checks, the technician will also inspect a few additional items. The engine air filter will be inspected for a buildup of dirt and debris. The air filter cleans the air before going through the air intake and into the engine to be mixed with fuel and burned. This prevents damage to the engine from dirt getting into the cylinder and provides the engine with clean air. If this filter becomes clogged, the engine will have to work harder to bring in the right amount of air to provide the power being requested, which will decrease the Grand Cherokee’s fuel efficiency. The engine’s cooling system will also be checked at this service to ensure the condition of the radiator, making sure there are no cracks in the coolant lines and ensuring that the coolant reservoir is filled properly.

35,000-Mile Service

After a couple more oil changes, as your vehicle crosses 35,000 miles, there are a few additional services your Grand Cherokee may require. The first is the gearbox fluids, including the transfer case, front differential, rear differential, and transmission. As you might have guessed, each gearbox has a set of gears in it that drive the axles. Just like the engine, these gears are lubricated by a specialized oil, and like engine oil, gearbox oil will not perform its best when it is old, contaminated, and broken down. Around 35,000 miles, your spark plugs should also be inspected and replaced if necessary as they can become burnt out and contaminated with carbon from igniting the fuel/air mixture. Jeep states that the spark plugs should be replaced no later than 50,000 miles. Therefore, if they are not replaced at the 35,000-mile service, they should be shortly thereafter.

60,000-Mile Service and Beyond

Between the 35,000 and 60,000-mile services, you are to continue getting the routine services at their recommended intervals. When you cross the 60,000-mile mark, the spark plug wires, also known as the ignition cables, should be inspected and replaced if necessary to ensure they provide adequate power to the spark plugs. Additionally, the coolant should be flushed at around 60,000 miles to continue to prevent engine overheating. The brakes will most likely be due for replacement at around 60,000 miles. However, if your Grand Cherokee is frequently used for off-roading or in stop-and-go traffic, it will likely be due for replacement sooner. This is why they are inspected at every oil change service. Beyond 60,000 miles, as your Grand Cherokee approaches 100,000 miles, maintenance gets a bit more intensive. After 100,000 miles, it is advised to start having oil changes performed more frequently, approximately every 6,000 miles.
