The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L have been awarded the highest possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a TOP SAFETY PICK+. This is consistent with the Grand Cherokee's reputation as the most-awarded SUV in history. The Grand Cherokee's safety features include a standard forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. It also offers features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Grand Cherokee Scores Top Ratings On All Tests.

The 2023 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L are graded "good" – the highest possible rating – in the four crashworthiness tests required to achieve TOP SAFETY PICK+. This test includes the Small overlap front driver test, Small overlap front passenger test, Moderate overlap front original test, and the updated Side impact test. The IIHS Top Safety Pick+ moderate overlap front crash test simulates a head-on collision with another vehicle. The test vehicle strikes a rigid barrier that covers 40% of its front width at a speed of 40 mph. A dummy representing an average-sized male is positioned in the driver's seat. The small overlap front crash test is similar, but the barrier covers only 25% of the front width. This test measures the protection offered to occupants in crashes with smaller vehicles or objects, such as trees or poles.

Automatic Emergency Braking System Earns the Highest Possible Rating.

The Grand Cherokee's automatic emergency braking system received an "advanced" rating in daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The system received a "superior" rating in nighttime conditions, the highest possible rating from the IIHS. The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes standard with automatic emergency braking technology called Full-Speed Collision Warning with Active Braking and Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection. This system uses a unique array of cameras and sensors to detect pedestrians and cyclists in daylight and nighttime conditions. If the system determines imminent collision, it will alert the driver and automatically apply the brakes if the driver does not respond. In certain situations, the system can bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

Who performs the TOP SAFETY PICK+ test?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's annual list of cars with top scores in crash tests and other safety evaluations is growing, with further additions since the original February 2023 release. The list is much shorter than in prior years because the tests are getting tougher. And that means the cars that meet the standards for being a TOP SAFETY PICK+ are safer than ever. Only 38 cars qualify for the highest achievement, a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, for the 2023 model year. In addition, 23 cars qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award this year. That's down from 101 total award-winning models last year and 90 models in 2021.
